Plastic Free Communities

In 2016 Hugo Tagholm, Surfers Against Sewage CEO and Ben Hewitt, Surfers Against Sewage Director of Campaigns co-created a campaign called 'Plastic Free Coastlines' which was developed and launched by environmental charity Surfers Against Sewage in July 2017 [https://www.theguardian.com/environment/2017/jul/20/plastics-campaign-calls-for-grassroots-action-to-cut-pollution-across-the-uk] with a high impact film called [https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=du7rE3sQ_tE&feature=youtu.be Wasteland], voiced by Oscar winning actress Imelda Staunton, with the aim of inspiring and empowering individuals and communities across the UK with the know-how to reduce their reliance on single-use plastics.

The aim of the campaign is to tackle avoidable single-use plastic, from the beach all the way back to the brands and businesses who create it. The programme aims to support communities (e.g. towns, villages and cities) to free where they live from single-use plastic by completing a 5 step objective plan to work towards achieving ‘Plastic Free Communities approved’ status.

Due to the demand from locations across the UK the programme was updated in 2017 to be called Plastic Free Communities. So far 350 communities – in villages, towns and cities collectively representing 24 million people – are working towards gaining plastic-free status. It involves a five-step guide, inspired by the Fair Trade status scheme.[https://www.theguardian.com/environment/2018/jun/17/surfers-against-sewage-ride-the-wave-of-the-harry-and-meghan-effect]

The first Plastic Free approved community was Penzance on the 4th December 2017 [https://www.theguardian.com/uk-news/2017/dec/05/penzance-wins-first-plastic-free-status-award-to-help-clean-up-beaches], shortly followed by the Isle of Alderney.

In January 2018 Surfers Against Sewage launched a campaign for a Plastic Free Parliament [https://www.theguardian.com/environment/2018/feb/01/surfers-against-sewage-urge-mps-to-make-parliament-plastic-free] after a Freedom of Information request by the charity revealed that more than a million takeway coffee cups and nearly 22,000 plastic straws were used in the last year in the House of Commons and Lords. The campaign was backed by Kerry McCarthy, a Labour MP and Steve Double, the Conservative MP for St Austell and Newquay and thousands of campaigners contacted their Members of Parliament. The campaign was won in September 2018 when the House of COmmons and Lordss implemented a series of changes to go single-use plastic free, including removing sachets and introducing a recycling system [https://www.bbc.co.uk/news/uk-politics-45590823].

In April 2018 Aberystwyth became the first major town in Wales to be declared plastic free.

In June 2018 Plymouth became the first plastic free city

In July 2018 Canary Wharf in London made a commitment to become the first commercial centre to go 'plastic free' in line with the campaign objectives and aiming to be the world's first international business centre to do so [https://www.businessgreen.com/bg/news/3036577/world-first-canary-wharf-set-to-become-plastic-free-community]
