| 释义 | Vera Twomey is an Irish Mother from Aghabullogue County Cork who became prominent in the fight for medical cannabis in Ireland. Her daughter Ava Barry suffers from a complex form of epilepsy called Dravet Syndrome which is described as a drug resistant form of epilepsy. After several years of treatment the only option open to her daughter was medical cannabis which was not available in Ireland. Vera focused on contacting the Health Minister to find a path forward to access treatment. Vera met with severe oppisition and in an effort to highlight her daughters situation began to speak publicly about her daughters urgent need for assistance. After much media coverage and following a journey to the kalapa clinic in Barcelona Spain to access the THC mediation necessary to compliment the CBD medication to control Avas seizures Vera was held at Dublin Airport and the medication was seized. Following further meetings with government officals which were not productive Vera Twomey began to walk from her home in Cork to Dublin in February 2017 a journey of 287 kilometers on foot. Vera stated that if the government wouldnt contact her she would have to contact them for Avas sake Her journey captured the imagination of the country and nine days later vera arrived in Dublin with thousands following in support. In spite of the support and the journey made by Vera and her supporters the government made no move to help. In June of 2017 the family were forced to leave Ireland and move to The Neatherlands to access treatment with medical cbd and thc for their daughter. After recieving medical treatment in The Neatherlands the family endured an enforced stay in The Neatherlands lasting six months while government officals decided wheather or not to allow the family to be granted a licence for medical thc which was needed for the family to return home. Eventually in December of 2017 Ava and her family returned to Ireland amid delight from the Irish public who had supported Vera and her families quest for justice. Vera Twomey subsequently won Person of the year which was presented to her in March 2018. It is said that Veras journey to access medication for Ava has changed the opinions of people all over Ireland. The future of medical cannabis will certainly be linked to this brave mother who simply would not accept no for an answer for her daughter. The introduction of leglislation regarding medical cannabis is still to be passed in Ireland However by speaking up and sharing Avas story Vera has changed attuitudes regarding medical cannabis in Ireland and the future can only bring positive change. |
