It was still countryside until the 1960s, and the first apartment house was built in 1966.^[1]^[2] Kummatti had a reputation as a problematic neighborhood, so the housing standards were improved by repairing the oldest apartment buildings in the 2000s.^[3]^[4]

The area has a Hesburger and a Teboil station. There are also a vocational institute, an elementary school, nursery school and the Kruununkirjuri office block, which has a police station and a registry office.
