"Wake Up in the Sky" is a song by American rapper Gucci Mane, American singer Bruno Mars and American rapper Kodak Black.[9] The song was released on digital music services on September 14, 2018.[10] It is the third single for Gucci's thirteenth studio album, Evil Genius (2018) as the eleventh track which was released on December 7, 2018.[11]

Background

The art cover features Mane's signature ice cream cone, which is also tattooed on his face, in the clouds during a flight.[12] In late August 2018, Mars posted in his Instagram a photo next to Kodak, giving the first signs of a partnership.[13] On September 13, Gucci finally announced the collaboration for release at midnight the next day.[14][15][16][17]

Composition

"Wake Up in the Sky" is a Hip hop, pop-rap and trap song.[18][19]

Commercial performance

The song debuted at number 30 on the Billboard Hot 100. After the release of the music video, the collaboration peaked at number 11, matching Gucci's career high peak of "I Get the Bag", featuring Migos, (reached in November 2017). The song remained at the top of the chart Rhythmic Songs for three consecutive weeks, being the rapper's third, Mars' tenth and Kodak's first number one in the list.

On January 9, 2019, "Wake Up in the Sky" was certified Platinum by the Recording Industry Association of America (RIAA) for sales of over 1,000,000 equivalent units in the US.[20]

Outside the United States, the song reached number 46 in Australia, number 36 in Canada, number 49 in Ireland and Portugal and number 65 in the United Kingdom. "Wake Up in the Sky" was registered on the Ultratip Bubbling Under chart for four weeks, although its peak position was not revealed.

Music video

The music video was released on October 31, 2018. In it, the performers are on a stage performing a soul music trio.[21] It was directed by Mars & Florent Dechard. In February 2019, the video clip hit the 200 million-view mark on YouTube.
