Prior to the construction of the observatory, the summit was a horizontal control point with an elevation of {{cvt|2,664|m|ft|0}};[1] now it is {{cvt|2,635|m|ft|0}} above sea level. It is the site of the Very Large Telescope and the VLT Survey Telescope. It is located {{cvt|120|km|mi|0}} south of Antofagasta and {{cvt|80|km|mi}} north of Taltal, as well as {{cvt|15|km|mi|1}} inland and {{cvt|5|km|mi|1}} west of highway B-710.
