It was originally released by Fontana Records. It includes "Je t'aime... moi non plus", which reached number 1 on the UK Singles Chart.[1] Critical reception{{Album ratings| rev1 = AllMusic | rev1score = {{Rating|4.5|5}}[2] | rev2 = Pitchfork | rev2score = 8.8/10[3] | rev3 = PopMatters | rev3score = {{Rating|8|10}}[4] }} The album has received critical acclaim. D.M. Edwards of PopMatters stated: "The arrangements by Arthur Greenslade are excellent and there are plenty of glimpses of the experimentation which would be a feature of Gainsbourg's music," further describing the album as "sophisticated, timeless pop music."[4] In 2017, Pitchfork placed it at number 44 on the "200 Best Albums of the 1960s" list.[5] Writing for Pitchfork, Cameron Cook called it "a love letter read out loud by its recipient: Every note and lyric is meant to highlight a certain aspect of Birkin's persona though Gainsbourg's lens, from her breathless delivery of every line to her heavily accented, coquettish French."[5] Track listing{{Track listing| all_writing = Serge Gainsbourg | extra_column = Vocals | title1 = Je t'aime... moi non plus | extra1 = Serge Gainsbourg, Jane Birkin | length1 = 4:23 | title2 = L'anamour | extra2 = Serge Gainsbourg | length2 = 2:17 | title3 = Orang-outan | extra3 = Jane Birkin | length3 = 2:28 | title4 = Sous le soleil exactement | extra4 = Serge Gainsbourg | length4 = 2:52 | title5 = 18-39 | extra5 = Jane Birkin | length5 = 2:39 | title6 = 69 année érotique | extra6 = Serge Gainsbourg, Jane Birkin | length6 = 3:21 | title7 = Jane B | extra7 = Jane Birkin | length7 = 3:09 | title8 = Elisa | extra8 = Serge Gainsbourg | length8 = 2:31 | title9 = Le canari est sur le balcon | extra9 = Jane Birkin | length9 = 2:20 | title10 = Les sucettes | extra10 = Serge Gainsbourg | length10 = 2:37 | title11 = Manon | extra11 = Serge Gainsbourg | length11 = 2:41 }}{{Track listing | headline = Reissue edition bonus track | collapsed = yes | extra_column = Vocals | title12 = La chanson de slogan | extra12 = Serge Gainsbourg, Jane Birkin | length12 = 2:53 }} PersonnelCredits adapted from liner notes.
