East Cape is the easternmost point of the main islands of New Zealand. It is located to the north of Gisborne in the northeast of the North Island.

East Cape - originally named "Cape East" is one of the 4 New Zealand Cardinal Capes[1] "Cape East" was named by James Cook, Commander of the Endeavour in the 1769-70 voyage. The other Cardinal Capes being named at the time North Cape, West Cape & Cape South

The name "East Cape" is also used to refer to the Gisborne region around the cape stretching from just north of the Mahia Peninsula northwards, and inland to Te Urewera National Park.{{Citation needed|date=May 2014|reason=Doesn't it go past Urewera to the west BOP coast at Opotiki, or at least Torere?}} This region was the site of many of the major conflicts of the New Zealand land wars in the 1860s.
