One species (P. grandidieri) can also be seen in brackish water.[1] Most species in this genus are threatened, and P. onilahy is probably extinct.[1] Most reach a length of {{convert|12|-|15|cm|in|abbr=on}}, but P. insolitus only reaches {{convert|5.5|cm|in|abbr=on}}, while P. grandidieri and P. oligacanthus reach {{convert|21|-|25|cm|in|abbr=on}}.[1][2] SpeciesThere are currently 10 recognized species in this genus:[2]
Additionally, cichlid from the eastern Anosy Region in far southeastern Madagascar may actually represent an undescribed species, popularly known as Ptychochromis sp.
