Football careerKorsten played in the Netherlands for N.E.C. and SBV Vitesse before earning a loan move to Leeds United in the Premier League. In this short amount of time Korsten showed he had the pace, skill and strength to cope with English football, scoring twice in games against Everton[3] and Derby County.[4] Leeds decided to pursue a permanent transfer.[5] However, Tottenham Hotspur also made a bid in the region of £1.5 million for the player, which was accepted.[6] Due to injury, Korsten did not make his debut for Tottenham until December 1999[6] and made only nine appearances in the Premier League in the 1999–2000 season.{{Citation needed|date=March 2014}} The following season he made 13 league appearances,{{Citation needed|date=March 2014}} scoring his first Tottenham goal in a 3–1 defeat against Liverpool at Anfield in April 2001.[7] On the final day of the season, he scored two spectacular goals in a 3–1 win over champions Manchester United at White Hart Lane.[8] The match proved to be his last as a professional footballer. In October 2001, due to persistent hip injuries, he was forced to retire at the age of 26.[9] Korsten returned to his former club, N.E.C., as a coach for its football academy.[10] He played 5 games for Dutch lower amateur side SCV '58 from Velp in their 2002–03 campaign but injuries forced him to quit the team early in the season.[11] In May 2011 Korsten returned to the game as player for Topklasse side Achilles '29.[12] After winning the district cup east, Korsten scored the only goal in the final of the KNVB Amateur Cup 2011 on 18 June.[13] He retired once again and joined the Achilles staff for the 2011/12 campaign as their assistant-manager.[14] Korsten resigned at Achilles in March 2012 and joined N.E.C. as an assistant-manager for the 2012–13 season.[15][16] References1. ^http://tobklasse.nl/spelers/832-willem-korsten 2. ^http://www.beijen.net/frank/cvs/korsten-w.htm 3. ^{{cite news | url = https://www.independent.co.uk/sport/football-korsten-snaps-back-1072161.html| title = Korsten snaps back|work=The Independent | date = 20 February 1999 |accessdate=10 March 2010| location = London| first = Tim| last = Collings}} 4. ^{{cite news | url = https://www.independent.co.uk/sport/football-olearys-hallmark-has-authentic-stamp-1082252.html| title = O'Leary's hallmark has authentic stamp|work=The Independent | date = 20 March 1999 |accessdate=10 March 2010| location = London| first = Derick| last = Allsop}} 5. ^{{cite news|url=http://football.guardian.co.uk/Observer_Match_Report/0,,-18267,00.html|title=Babies have Spurs crying|date=29 August 1999|accessdate=29 July 2013|work=The Observer}} 6. ^1 {{cite news|url=http://news.bbc.co.uk/sport2/hi/football/teams/t/tottenham_hotspur/861605.stm|title=Korsten's new misery|date=1 August 2000|accessdate=29 July 2013|work=BBC}} 7. ^{{cite news | url = http://news.bbc.co.uk/sport1/hi/football/eng_prem/1290269.stm| title = Liverpool wear down Spurs|publisher=BBC | date = 22 April 2001 |accessdate=4 November 2009}} 8. ^{{cite news | url = http://news.bbc.co.uk/sport1/hi/football/eng_prem/1338557.stm| title = Spurs hand United third straight loss|publisher=BBC | date = 19 May 2001 |accessdate=4 November 2009}} 9. ^{{cite news|accessdate=6 July 2008|url=http://news.bbc.co.uk/sport2/hi/football/teams/t/tottenham_hotspur/1577936.stm|title=Korsten forced to retire|publisher=BBC Sport | date=3 October 2001}} 10. ^{{cite news|accessdate=6 July 2008|url=http://news.bbc.co.uk/sport2/hi/football/eng_prem/1906770.stm|title=Korsten's coaching role|publisher=BBC Sport | date=2 April 2002}} 11. ^De historie van S.C.V.’58, scv58.eu 12. ^Willem Korsten maakt rentree bij Achilles'29, De Gelderlander, 10 May 2011 13. ^Korsten bezorgt Achilles'29 de KNVB-beker, De Gelderlander, 18 June 2011 14. ^Selectie Achilles'29 seizoen 2011–2012 15. ^Willem korsten per direct gestopt bij Achilles'29 Achilles '29, 7 maart 2012 16. ^Technische staf compleet met Robert Molenaar en Willem Korsten, NEC-Nijmegen.nl, 11 april 2012 External links
