It is the administrative center of Zastavna Raion. Zastavna is located in 26 km to the north of the city of Chernivtsi, in the historical region of Bukovina. The name of Zastavna most likely origins from its location surrounded by ponds (ukr. "stav"). There is also a version that the name goes from the turnpike (ukr.
