It includes the highest peaks on the island, such as Punta La Marmora ({{cvt|1,834|m|disp=or}}), Monte Spada ({{cvt|1,595|m|disp=or}}), Punta Erba Irdes ({{cvt|1,676|m|disp=or}}), Bruncu Spina ({{cvt|1,829|m|disp=or}}) and Punta Paulinu ({{cvt|1,792|m|disp=or}}). The range forms part of the Gennargentu National Park. Geologically, its rocks are amongst the oldest in Europe, and are therefore smooth shaped: rock types include schist, limestone and granite. ToponymyThe etymology of the name {{lang|it|Gennargentu}} is not attested: it could mean "Silver Door" ({{lang-sc|jenna (d)e arghentu|links=no}}), "Door of the Winds" ({{lang|sc|jenna de bentu}}) or "Door of Absinthium" ({{lang|sc|jenna de assentu}}). Ski resortsThe mountains are home to the only ski resorts on the island: on Monte Spada, Bruncu Spina, Separadorgiu and S'Arena.[1][2] See also
