"Grail" is an episode from the first season of the science fiction television series Babylon 5.

Synopsis

A human traveler, Aldous Gajic, arrives on Babylon 5, having previously sent notice to each of the alien ambassadors wanting to seek if their kinds had knowledge of the Holy Grail. Sinclair, only told of his arrival moment before by Delenn and Lennier, asks Aldous about his quest, and learns he is the last known seeker of the Grail.

Elsewhere, in the station's seedy underbelly, one of the black market leaders Deuce coerces station worker Thomas "Jinxo" Jordan to pay the credits that he owes, or will have his mind wiped; Deuce forces him to watch what appears to be Ambassador Kosh use a tentacle from under its robes to attack a woman. The woman is later found by security and at medlab, Dr. Franklin determines she is the latest of several mind-wiped victims found in the underbelly, but no idea what caused it. Garibaldi recognizes the woman as a key witness in a trial against Deuce, and without her testimony, Ombuds Wellington is forced to clear Duece of any charges.

Jinxo returns to the main station and attempts to steal credits, inadvertently pickpocketing money from Aldous while Garibaldi is watching. Garibaldi apprehends Jinxo to take to court, asking Aldous to come along as a witness. In court, Wellington prepares to send Jinxo off station, but he warns that he can't leave the station. Aldous convinces Wellington to leave Jinxo in his steed. As Aldous leads Jinxo to his appointments with the ambassadors, he learns Jinxo thinks he is cursed, as he had worked on each of the previous Babylon stations, but as soon as he left each, whether on leave or complete, the station suffered a catastrophic loss, and fears leaving Babylon 5. Aldous assures him he is not, and explains how he came to search for the Grail, having met a person on leave that taught and inspired him to search for it.

Meanwhile, Dr. Franklin comes to identify that markings on the bodies of those mindwiped resembled that of a Na'ka'leen Feeders. Knowing the feeder will not likely travel far, Garibaldi prepares security teams to search the lower levels of the station. Meanwhle, Deuce has his underlings capture Wellington. After finding the other ambassadors unable to help, Aldous and Jinxo go to meet Ambassador Kosh, and Jinxo immediately warns Aldous to back away. He explains what he saw earlier with Deuce and Kosh, and Aldous warns him he must tell Sinclair. They are suddenly set on by Deuce's men, and Aldous covers for Jinxo as he gets away. Jinxo runs into Sinclair, and Sinclair relays for Garibaldi to follow them.

Decue has Wellington secured to a chair, where the Feeder, disguised as Kosh, is prepared to mind-wipe him, while Aldous is forced to watch. Just then, Garibaldi's team arrives, injuring several of Deuce's men and forcing the Feeder to back off. Jinxo uses the opportunity to try to free Wellington, but one of Deuce's men tries to find on him. Aldous steps into the line of fire, mortally wounding him. Sinclair and Garibaldi kill the Feeder, and see to Aldous. Aldous gives his last will and testament, leaving his possessions to Jinxo, and dies.

In the aftermath, Sinclair explains to Kosh that Deuce had made a fake Vorlon containment suit to intimidate people. Sinclair prepares to send Aldous' body to home, and find that Jinxo, now dressing as Aldous and going by his given name Thomas, planning to accompany him before continuing on his quest for the Grail. Delenn gives Thomas a Minbari seed to plant on Aldous' body as a form of respect. As Thomas' transport leaves, Sinclair, Garibaldi, and Ivanova attempt to downplay the legend of Jinxo's curse on the station.

Arc significance

  • Jinxo's explanation of his "curse" clarifies the circumstances of the destruction of the first three previous Babylon Stations, and indicates that the disappearance of Babylon 4 was particularly sudden and uncanny.
  • While talking with Gajic, Delenn and Lennier indicate for the first time that the warrior and religious castes of Minbari are usually at odds.
  • Kosh's reply of "good" when told that the mystery of the Vorlons' true appearance has been misused to provoke fear among the population of the station hints at the deliberate manipulation he is engaged in.
  • According to series creator, primary writer, and executive producer J. Michael Straczynski, "...the [G]rail story was fairly self-contained, not much in the way of arc related stuff there."[1]

Production details

  • The character of Mr. Flinn is played by and credited as John Flinn, AKA John C. Flinn III, the primary DP for the series.[1]
  • The term "cycles," as used in Grail, refers to station revolutions, a period of about one minute. The reference is not used again in that way in the series.[2]
