The early settlement was also known as "Bonny-Town" and "Mill Hill". A sawmill located at Airlie enabled it to prosper.[3][4] A post office opened in 1869, and mail was delivered daily.[3][5] During the 1870s and 1880s, Airlie had two stores, two blacksmith shops, three sawmills, and 12 houses. The Cherry Hotel was located at Airlie, owned by early settlers, the Cherry family.[3][6][7] Two churches were built: St. James Episcopal Church in 1886, and Calvin Presbyterian Church in 1889.[8][9] The population in 1890, and in 1908, was about 100.[3][10] The settlement continued to prosper into the first decade of the 1900s.[10] Elijah Kidd, a resident of Airlie, served as deputy reeve and then reeve of Mulmur Township between 1913 and 1917.[3][11] In 1914, the post office closed.[5] {{wide image|Airlie, Ontario (2017).jpg|1000px|(From left to right): former Orange Hall, former Calvin Presbyterian Church (1889), and St. James Church (1886)}}References1. ^1 {{cite web | title = Airlie | publisher = Natural Resources Canada | date = October 6, 2016 | url = http://www4.rncan.gc.ca/search-place-names/unique/FABZL}} {{Simcoe County}}2. ^{{cite web | title = Airlie | publisher = Statistics Canada | date = November 2, 2016 | url = http://www23.statcan.gc.ca/imdb/p3VD.pl?CLV=4&CPV=3543003&CST=01012011&CVD=116949&Function=getVD&MLV=4&TVD=116940}} 3. ^1 2 3 4 5 {{cite web | title = Mulmur Township Settlement Areas and Signs | publisher = Mulmur Township | url = http://mulmur.ca/content/visitors-centre/heritage/settlement-areas/binder-settlement-area-descriptions-and-signs.pdf | accessdate = October 31, 2017}} 4. ^{{cite journal | last = Rosenthal | first = Max | date = February 1965 | title = Early Post Offices of the Fergus District | url = http://bnatopics.org/journals/1965/BNA%20Topics,%20Vol.%2022,%20No.%202,%20February%201965,%20Whole%20No.%20230.pdf | journal = BNA Topics | publisher = British North America Philatelic Society | volume = 22 | issue = 2 | pages = 37-39}} 5. ^1 {{cite web | title = Airlie | publisher = Library and Archives Canada | date = May 27, 2014 | url = http://www.bac-lac.gc.ca/eng/discover/postal-heritage-philately/post-offices-postmasters/Pages/item.aspx?IdNumber=11586&}} 6. ^{{cite book | title = Ontario Commercial Year Book and Gazetteer : 1906 | publisher = Ontario Year Book | year = 1906 | url = https://archive.org/details/ontariocommercia00slsnuoft | pages = 304}} 7. ^{{cite web | title = Adjala–Tosorontio #5 | publisher = Wayne Cook | url = http://www.waynecook.com/zadjalatosorontio.html | accessdate = October 31, 2017}} 8. ^{{cite web | title = History | publisher = St. James' Anglican Church Clougher-Lisle | url = http://stjamesclougherlisle.ca/history.htm | accessdate = October 31, 2017}} 9. ^{{Google maps | url = https://www.google.com/maps/@44.2613784,-80.0081945,3a,41.6y,354.56h,100.45t/data=!3m6!1e1!3m4!1s-zLX85sejdgyRyBlz0oV3Q!2e0!7i13312!8i6656?hl=en | accessdate = October 31, 2017}} 10. ^1 {{cite book | last = Mercer | first = Adam, G. | title = Lovell's Gazetteer of the Dominion of Canada | publisher = J.
