"Hunter, Prey" is an episode from the second season of the science fiction television series Babylon 5.

Entertainment and news website Geek.com included "Hunter, Prey"'s season two as "essential watching."^[1] Reviewer Graham Templeton writes that this episode intensifies "a new major plot. This one's been bubbling for a while, and now the pot boiled over. Thought the crew had a lot on their minds before?"^[1]

Synopsis

Sheridan receives priority orders from Earth to initiate a manhunt for Dr. Everett Jacobs, the former physician for President Clark. EarthGov suspect he may have information that would threaten Earth Alliance's security and believes he was travelling to Babylon 5 and give Sheridan orders to kill, if necessary. EarthGov representative Derek Cranston soon arrives to oversee the manhunt, taking over control over the security staff and initiating full security sweeps. Meanwhile, Sheridan is contacted by one of General Hague's operatives, who privately tells them he needs to see to recovering Jacobs unharmed as the information he has may be keep the conspiracy behind the death of President Santiago. Sheridan relays this to Ivanova and Garibaldi; Garibaldi, in turn, reaches out to Dr. Franklin for his help, since he was a former student under Dr. Jacobs. To give Garibaldi and Franklin time, Sheridan gives a convincing suggestion of where Jacobs may be hiding to Cranston, which draws off security away from Belowdeck.

Meanwhile, Jacobs is aboard the station but looking for fake identification to leave the station. His actions draw the attention of a black market dealer Max. Max captures him, taking various items off Jacobs to sell as well as a hidden data crystal which he sees has information related to President Clark. Max sells the other items and makes contact with Cranston, offering to turn Jacobs over for a finder's fee. Cranston agrees. Garibaldi and Franklin discover a salesclerk in Belowdeck selling a pocketwatch given only to high members in EarthGov, and learn of Max's identity. They break into Max's hideout while Max is arranging for Jacobs' trade, subdue Max's henchmen and free Jacobs. Garibaldi stays behind to confront Max on his return and recover the data crystal.

Among these events, Sheridan is curious about Ambassador Kosh's presence at the station, as according to Ivanova, Kosh's habits have changed since Sheridan became station commander. Kosh calls for Sheridan. Sheridan asks if Kosh has been monitoring him, but Kosh continues to remind Sheridan that he does not understand who he actually is, but offers to help teach him.

With Jacobs secure, he tells Sheridan and the others the data crystal contain Clark's medical records, showing he had no signs of illness when he left the President's ship a day before it exploded, proving Clark had knowledge of the event. However, a new problem has arisen in that Cranston has learned of the station's sensor systems can be modified to scan for identification crystals embedded in EarthGov members including Jacobs, and it is only a matter of time before they will discover. They work a plan with Kosh to place Jacobs in an artificially induced coma aboard Kosh's ship, which is impervious to the ship's scanners, allowing them to mask Jacobs' body when Cranston scans it. With no apparent sign of Jacobs aboard, Cranston cedes control back to Sheridan and prepares to leave. Hague's agent thanks Sheridan and tells them they will help transport Jacobs to safety.
