Nikolai Antonovich Mukho ({{lang-ru|Никола́й Анто́нович Мухо́}}; December 6, 1913, Kronstadt, Saint Petersburg Governorate, Russian Empire – August 6, 1986, Leningrad, USSR) was a Soviet, Russian painter, lived and worked in Leningrad, regarded as one of representatives of the Leningrad school of painting,[1] most famous for his portrait painting.

Biography

Nikolai Antonovich Mukho was born December 6, 1913, in Kronstadt, a Russian seaport town, located on Kotlin Island, 30 kilometers west of Saint Petersburg near the head of the Gulf of Finland.

From 1934–1940, Nikolai Mukho studied at Tavricheskaya Art School in Leningrad. After graduation in 1940 Nikolai Mukho entered in the painting department of the Leningrad Institute of Painting, Sculpture and Architecture.

In August 1941 Nikolai Mukho was drafted into the Red Army. He was a veteran of World War II, participated in the defense of Leningrad. After being wounded and demobilized in late 1943, Nikolai Mukho returned to the institute. He studied of Mikhail Bernshtein, Semion Abugov, Alexander Zaytsev, Genrikh Pavlovsky, Gleb Savinov.

In 1950 Nikolai Mukho graduated from Leningrad Institute of Painting, Sculpture and Architecture named after Ilya Repin in Boris Ioganson personal workshop. His graduation work was genre painting named "The Leningrad Metro", dedicated to the builders of subway in Leningrad (first stations were opened in 1950).[2]

Since 1951 Nikolai Mukho has participated in Art Exhibitions. He painted portraits, genre and historical compositions, seascapes, landscapes, sketches from the life. In 1957 he was admitted to the Leningrad Union of Artists.[3] His solo exhibition was in Leningrad in 1989.

Leading place in the works of Nikolai Mukho occupied the theme of the sea and life of coastal cities. The artist worked in Yuzhno-Sakhalinsk, Murmansk, Sevastopol, Kronstadt, on the Northern Dvina. The recognition received as a master of sketches painted from the life. The works of Nicholas Mukho distinguished decorative, bright saturated colors, and vigorous touch, playing a constructive role. Master of the plain-air paintings.

Nikolai Antonovich Mukho died on August 6, 1986 in Leningrad. His paintings reside in art museums and private collections in Russia, France, England, the United States, Japan, and other countries.
