It was the 23rd year of season play for Houston. The team was coached by seventh-year head coach Bill Yeoman who would later be inducted into the College Football Hall of Fame in 2001. The team played its home games in the Astrodome, a 53,000-person capacity stadium off-campus in Houston. Houston competed as a member of the NCAA in the University Division, independent of any athletic conference. It was their ninth year of doing so. At this time, Houston was on probation from the NCAA, and therefore was not eligible to compete in any post-season bowl games. Following the overall season, several players were selected for the 1969 NFL Draft. 100 points in the November 23rd game against Tulsa remains the most points scored by a team in Division I college football history.[1] Schedule{{CFB schedule| rankyear = 1968 | poll = AP |{{CFB schedule entry | date = September 14 | w/l = w | nonconf = y | rank = | opponent = Tulane | site_stadium = Astrodome | site_cityst = Houston | score = 54–7 | attend = 36,415[2] }} |{{CFB schedule entry | date = September 21 | w/l = t | nonconf = y | away = y | rank = 11 | opponent = Texas | opprank = 4 | site_stadium = Texas Memorial Stadium | site_cityst = Austin, Texas (rivalry) | score = 20–20 | attend = 66,397[2] }} |{{CFB schedule entry | date = October 4 | w/l = w | nonconf = y | rank = 12 | opponent = {{cfb link|year=1968|team=Cincinnati Bearcats |title=Cincinnati}} | site_stadium = Astrodome | site_cityst = Houston | score = 71–33 | attend = 31,881[2] }} |{{CFB schedule entry | date = October 12 | w/l = l | nonconf = y | rank = 11 | opponent = Oklahoma State | site_stadium = Astrodome | site_cityst = Houston | score = 17–21 | attend = 41,889[2] }} |{{CFB schedule entry | date = October 26 | w/l = w | nonconf = y | away = y | rank = | opponent = Ole Miss | opprank = 17 | site_stadium = Mississippi Veterans Memorial Stadium | site_cityst = Jackson, Mississippi | score = 29–7 | attend = 32,157[2] }} |{{CFB schedule entry | date = November 2 | w/l = t | nonconf = y | away = y | rank = 15 | opponent = Georgia | opprank = 7 | site_stadium = Sanford Stadium | site_cityst = Athens, Georgia | score = 10–10 | attend = 59,381[2] }} |{{CFB schedule entry | date = November 9 | w/l = w | nonconf = y | away = y | rank = 13 | opponent = {{cfb link|year=1968|team=Memphis Tigers|title=Memphis State}} | site_stadium = Memphis Memorial Stadium | site_cityst = Memphis, Tennessee | score = 27–7 | attend = 35,592[2] }} |{{CFB schedule entry | date = November 16 | w/l = w | nonconf = y | rank = 14 | opponent = Idaho | site_stadium = Astrodome | site_cityst = Houston | score = 77–3 | attend = 30,412[2] }} |{{CFB schedule entry | date = November 23 | w/l = w | nonconf = y | rank = 11 | opponent = Tulsa | site_stadium = Astrodome | site_cityst = Houston | score = 100–6 | attend = 34,098[2] }} |{{CFB schedule entry | date = November 29 | w/l = l | away = y | rank = 10 | opponent = Florida State | site_stadium = Gator Bowl Stadium | site_cityst = Jacksonville, Florida | score = 20–40 | attend = 39,400[2] }} }} Poll rankings
