Mission

The Consortium for Sustainable Urbanization (CSU) is a 501(c) (3) organization of design professionals and academics which was established in 2008, and is affiliated with UN Habitat and U.N. ECOSOC. CSU formed with the goal to “promote a better understanding of the role of sustainable urbanization in the planning of cities”

Overview

The CSU has worked on conferences in collaboration with UN-Habitat, the AIA New York, the City of New York, and allied organizations. Their mission includes linking the design community, the general public, and the United Nations in support of the Sustainable Development Goals and the New Urban Agenda.

Purpose

Their purpose is to advocate for responsible planning and design through a cross-sectoral approach, hosting high-level meetings and public forums with global thought leaders. They work with leaders, professionals, governments, NGOs and academics.

Past Events

CSU advocate for the consideration of Sustainable Urbanization as a tool for development and have contributed heavily to the achievement of SDG11 (Make cities and human settlements inclusive, safe, resilient and sustainable), and for the New Urban Agenda adopted at Habitat III in 2015.

Since 2008, CSU members have co-organized events at the United Nations Headquarters, UN-Habitat World Urban Forums, Habitat III in Quito, and the Center for Architecture in New York with many partners but mainly, UN-Habitat, AIA New York Chapter, UNDSEA, TAG, UCLG. These events engaged national and local governments, architects, engineers and urban planners, UN representatives, the private sector, foundations, academia and civil society.
