Jehsong Baak (August 2, 1967)^[1]^[2] is a Korean-American photographer who lives and works in Paris, France. He is noted for his personal and intimate black and white photographs.

Baak was born in August 2, 1967 in Junju, South Korea. At age 9, he and his family emigrated to the United States. After North Carolina and Alabama, his family settled in New Carrollton, Maryland. Baak studied architecture at Eleanor Roosevelt High School in Greenbelt, Maryland. It was during this time that Baak began taking photographs. After a brief stint at the University of Michigan in Ann Arbor, Baak dropped out and moved to New York City in 1987 to pursue photography. His early work was influenced by //#3'>3], Josef Koudelka,Bill Brandt, Emmet Gowin, Lee Friedlander. At age 23, Baak abandoned photography and worked various jobs in television production before taking up photography again 7 years later when Baak left New York and settled in Paris in 1998.

Baak’s first book, //#4'>4], was published in 2006 by the French Publisher, Robert Delpire, with an introduction by the French poet and art critic, Alain Jouffroy. The book chronicles Baak’s travels in Europe and in the U.S. primarily from 1998 to 2005. In 2008, Baak’s second book, “Photographs”, was published by HUP Gallery in Amsterdam, Holland, with text by Eddie Marsman, a curator and writer in Groningen, Holland. In 2016, Baak’s third book, “One Last Goodbye^[5]”, was published by Wonderlust Press, with text by Baak, Roger Ballen, and Holly Roussel.

In 2011, Lisa Erf, the now deceased director of acquisitions at JP Morgan Chase Art Collection, invited Baak to be the guest of honor of Paris Photo^[6] where his work was exhibited alongside Diane Arbus and Andy Warhol.

Robert Delpire has said of Baak’s work: “…his pictures come from a place he calls his own. A place he blends into perfectly. Fogs, silhouettes and transparency, he fades away and turns what he calls a self-portrait into a strange picture of someone astonished to discover that the vague silhouette is that of the photographer who is, once again, outside of the frame. Elsewhere.”

He is a part of Robert Delpire's retrospective exhibition^[7]^[8]^[9] which started in Arles, la Maison européenne de la photographie and touring around the globe including aperture gallery in NYC.
