| name = Jane Placide | birth_date = 1804 | death_date = May 16, 1835 | occupation = Actress }}Jane Placide (1804 – May 16, 1835) was an American actress.[1] Early lifeJane's parents had immigrated to the United States in 1792. Her mother was a singer, her father Alexandre Placide was a theater manager in Charleston.[2][3] Placide had three siblings; Caroline, Henry and Thomas.[4] All four children became well-known actors, however, it's unclear which stage name they later used.[5] CareerPlacide made her theater debut in New Orleans in 1923 where she mainly starred in Shakespearean roles. Before she became the most celebrated actress in New Orleans, Placide had taken the stage three years before in Norfolk, Virginia. Placide later gained more fame when she appeared at James H. Caldwell's American Theatre in James H. Kennicott's romantic tragedy Irma; or The Prediction in 1830.[6] It is said that Caldwell and Edwin Forrest were both in love with Placide. Forrest supposedly challenged Caldwell to a duel, which never happened.[5][6][7][8] DeathPlacide was buried at the Girod Cemetery originally. The cemetery was eventually disbanded and her remains were reburied at the Hope Mausoleum.[1] References1. ^1 {{Cite web|url=http://www.la-cemeteries.com/Maps/Orleans/Pics/Hope%20Mausoleum-%20Girod%20St%20Cemetery/OR40Pics.htm|title=Hope Mausoleum|last=|first=|date=|website=New Orleans Cemeteries|archive-url=|archive-date=|dead-url=|access-date=}} 2. ^{{Cite journal|last=Brockett|first=O.G.|date=1962|title=The European career of Alexandre Placide|journal=The Southern Speech Journal|volume=27|issue=4|pages=306–313|doi=10.1080/10417946209371658}} 3. ^{{Cite book|title=The Theatrical Rambles of Mr. and Mrs. John Greene|last=Durang|first=Charles|publisher=Wildside Press LLC|year=2007|isbn=9780809513062|editor-last=Slout|editor-first=William L.|location=|pages=54–56}} 4. ^{{Cite journal|title=Henry Placide - oi|url=http://oxfordindex.oup.com/view/10.1093/oi/authority.20110803100329751}} 5. ^1 {{Cite book|title=Frenchmen, Desire, Good Children ... and Other Streets of New Orleans!|last=Chase|first=John Churchill|publisher=Quid Pro Books|year=2014|isbn=9781610272391|location=|pages=}} 6. ^1 {{Cite book|title=Historical Dictionary of American Theater: Beginnings|last=Fisher|first=James|publisher=Rowman & Littlefield|year=2015|isbn=9780810878334|location=|pages=351–352}} 7. ^{{Cite web|url=http://dla.library.upenn.edu/dla/ead/ead.html?id=EAD_upenn_rbml_MsColl5|title=Edwin Forrest collection, circa 1815–1931|website=dla.library.upenn.edu|language=EN|access-date=2018-04-01}} 8. ^{{Cite journal|last=Hughes|first=Bethany|date=2018|title=The Indispensable Indian: Edwin Forrest, Pushmataha, and Metamora|url=https://www.cambridge.org/core/journals/theatre-survey/article/indispensable-indian-edwin-forrest-pushmataha-and-metamora/A85D4F40C96637D7D0A7B1FE12822015|journal=Theatre Survey|language=en|volume=59|issue=1|pages=23–44|doi=10.1017/S0040557417000473|issn=0040-5574|via=}} External links
