The Museum of Innovation and Science (miSci, formerly the Schenectady Museum & Suits-Bueche Planetarium) is a museum and planetarium located in Schenectady, New York. Its mission is "to celebrate, explore and inspire science and technology, past, present, and future"[1] The museum's Executive Director is William (Mac)Sudduth, Ph.D., the Education and Planetarium Manager is Megan Norris, and the Curator of Collections and Exhibitions is Chris Hunter.[2] Most of its exhibits focus on science and technology.

Inside of the museum is the Suits-Bueche Planetarium. It contains a GOTO Chronos Star Machine, one of only 16 in the United States, which is capable of displaying 8,500 stars and 24 constellation outlines. The projector can show the sky from any location on Earth 100,000 years in the past or in the future.[3]

Also located at miSci is a Challenger Learning Center (CLC). Opened in 2014, the CLC at miSci offers simulated missions to space for groups and for the public. Groups can book missions including Exploration Station, Rendezvous with a Comet, Earth Odyssey, and Expedition Mars (starting 2017). Visitors can purchase tickets for public Challenger Adventures, which runs on Saturdays and holidays at 2:00 PM and 3:30 PM. Tickets for a Challenge Adventure cost Admission + $10 for Adults, $8 for Seniors, and $5 for Children. Challenger Adventures are for visitors of at least 5 years of age. All Children under 7 must be each accompanied by an adult. All groups of children must have at least one adult present.[4]

The archives contain over 1.5 million photographs, making them the seventh largest collection of photographs in the US (not including the federal government). The archives also include 110 radios, 60 televisions, 15,000 patents, 5000 books, and 1000 films.[5] Many of the items relate to the history of Schenectady and General Electric. The archives are open to the public with an appointment during Monday to Friday from 9:00 AM to 5:00 PM.[6]

Permanent exhibits

In addition to its temporary exhibitions, the museum houses the following permanent exhibits:

  • Fueling the Future: An exhibit on different methods of powering automobiles, including biodiesel, electricity, ethanol, gasoline, and hydrogen. It includes a 1978 electric car prototype made by General Electric, a Schenectady company.
  • MRI: Examining the Human Body: An exhibit that explores the science behind a landmark medical imaging system developed in New York's Capital Region.[7]

Hours and fees

The Museum of Innovation and Science is open Monday through Saturday from 9 AM to 5 PM and on Sunday from 12-5PM. Admission is $10.50 for adults (12+), $9 for senior citizens (65+), and $7.50 for children aged 3–12. Children under three are free. Planetarium shows cost $5 in addition to the admission fee.[1][3]
