Located west of Great Slave Lake, it has all-weather road connections by way of the Yellowknife Highway (Great Slave Highway) branch off the Mackenzie Highway, and the Deh Cho Bridge opened November 30, 2012 near Fort Providence over the Mackenzie. The bridge replaces the ice bridge and ferry, enabling year-round crossing of the river. Fort Providence is well known for hosting the annual Mackenzie Days celebrations in August each year. DemographicsThe recorded population was 695 in the 2016 Census, a decrease of 5.3% from 2011. Of these the majority, 620, were Indigenous people, made up of 590 First Nations, Dene people, and 30 Métis.[5] In 2017 the Government of the Northwest Territories reported that the population was 770 with an average yearly growth rate of 0.3% from 2007.[4] {{Historical populations|align=none|cols=2 |1996|774 |1997|828 |1998|843 |1999|842 |2000|837 |2001|819 |2002|803 |2003|824 |2004|801 |2005|799 |2006|757 |2007|744 |2008|742 |2009|752 |2010|748 |2011|771 |2012|778 |2013|789 |2014|788 |2015|798 |2016|788 |2017|770 |footnote= Sources: NWT Bureau of Statistics (2001 - 2017)[6] }} First NationsThe Dene of the community are represented by the Deh Gah Gotie Dene Band[7] and the Métis by Fort Providence Métis Nation.[8] Both groups belong to the Dehcho First Nations.[9] Gallery{{gallery|File:Fort Providence Health Centre.jpg |alt1= |Fort Providence Health Centre |File:Fort Providence Church.jpg |alt2= |Our Lady of Providence RC Mission in Fort Providence |File:View of Providence Mission Indian Residential School showing new Roman Catholic Mission on the left, Fort Providence, NWT (13929395680).jpg |alt3= |Providence Mission Indian Residential School showing new Roman Catholic Mission on the left, circa 1930 |File:Fort Providence Deh Cho Land Use Planning Committee & Dene Fur Clouds.jpg |alt4= |Fort Providence Deh Cho Land Use Planning Committee & Dene Fur Clouds sign |File:Merv Hardie ferry from Fort Providence side 05.jpg |alt5= |The Merv Hardie ferry in use before the bridge was opened. |File:Deh Cho Bridge 05.jpg |alt6= |The Deh Cho Bridge }} ClimateFort Providence has a continental subarctic climate typical of the Northwest Territories' populated areas. It is marked by a long cold winter season and short, warm summers, that in many ways are warmer than expected for an area so far north. Transition seasons are extremely short, with temperatures rising and falling quickly in respective seasons. {{Weather box|metric first= Y |single line = Y |location= Fort Providence, 1981–2010 normals, extremes 1943–present |Jan record high C= 7.0 |Feb record high C= 9.9 |Mar record high C= 16.5 |Apr record high C= 24.0 |May record high C= 31.3 |Jun record high C= 34.4 |Jul record high C= 35.2 |Aug record high C= 36.1 |Sep record high C= 30.3 |Oct record high C= 24.4 |Nov record high C= 12.8 |Dec record high C= 11.8 |year record high C= 36.1 |Jan high C= -18.9 |Feb high C= -12.9 |Mar high C= -6.2 |Apr high C= 5.8 |May high C= 12.8 |Jun high C= 20.9 |Jul high C= 23.5 |Aug high C= 20.4 |Sep high C= 13.4 |Oct high C= 3.2 |Nov high C= -7.7 |Dec high C= -15.1 |year high C= 3.3 |Jan mean C= -23.4 |Feb mean C= -18.7 |Mar mean C= -13.6 |Apr mean C= -1.0 |May mean C= 6.3 |Jun mean C= 13.5 |Jul mean C= 16.9 |Aug mean C= 14.0 |Sep mean C= 7.9 |Oct mean C= -0.8 |Nov mean C= -11.5 |Dec mean C= -19.2 |year mean C= -2.5 |Jan low C= -27.8 |Feb low C= -24.3 |Mar low C= -20.9 |Apr low C= -7.7 |May low C= -0.3 |Jun low C= 6.0 |Jul low C= 10.1 |Aug low C= 7.6 |Sep low C= 2.4 |Oct low C= -4.8 |Nov low C= -15.2 |Dec low C= -23.1 |year low C= -8.2 |Jan record low C= -49.4 |Feb record low C= -50.0 |Mar record low C= -45.0 |Apr record low C= -41.1 |May record low C= -22.2 |Jun record low C= -5.6 |Jul record low C= -2.0 |Aug record low C= -2.8 |Sep record low C= -14.4 |Oct record low C= -27.3 |Nov record low C= -44.4 |Dec record low C= -49.4 |year record low C= -50.0 |time day= 1500 LST |humidity colour= green |Jan humidity= 74.9 |Feb humidity= 67.6 |Mar humidity= 53.1 |Apr humidity= 44.4 |May humidity= 41.8 |Jun humidity= 41.7 |Jul humidity= 47.1 |Aug humidity= 51.4 |Sep humidity= 57.6 |Oct humidity= 71.3 |Nov humidity= 84.0 |Dec humidity= 80.2 |year humidity= 59.6 |source 1= Environment Canada[10][11] }} See also
