}}Abbalagere is a village in the Shimoga taluk of Shimoga district in the Indian state of Karnataka.^[1]^[2]

Economy

Farmers primarily grow Areca nut and plantation crops; paddy, maize and vegetables are major crops as well. Many villagers commute daily to nearby Shimoga city.

Abbalgere was once known for tobacco production. The Central Tobacco market yard operated in the village for many years. However in 2006-2007 former PM and MP of Hassan, H. D. Deve Gowda (member of the Central Tobacco board) shifted the market to his own district Hassan (Ramanathapuram). After the relocation all farmers residing in Shimoga, Chikmagalur and Davangere left the tobacco industry.

Location

Abbalagere is located along the Shimoga-Hanagal State Highway, the road which passes through Savalunga, Shikaripura. Shimoga is situated approximately seven kilometer from Abbalagere.

Education

Nearby educational institutions located include the Jawaharlal Nehru National Engineering College and the Bapuji Ayurvedic College and the University of Agricultural and Horticultural Sciences. One government primary school and one government high school are there.

Religion

Temples include Sri.Ujjayani Marula Siddeshwara temple, Ganesha temple, Choudamma temple, Muruda Basaveshwara temple and the Bhavi Mallappa temple.

The Ujjain Eshwara temple regularly holds a three-five year Parav festival.

Demographics

The villages have a diverse population. It has more Lingayath, Tamils, Schedule mixed race Banjar people and other mixed race individuals. Land prices are somewhat costly due to its proximity to Shimoga.

Notables

Shri. K. Devirappa contributed through improvement of socio-economic, agrarian sections and improving the lives of the people. He fought for financial remuneration to farmers from the government of Karnataka, who lost their land to the "Upper Tunga" irrigation project during 1996-2006. Abbalagere too sound through Shri. Abbas Ji Abbalagere Kannada poet/ Literate contributed to Kannada Akshra loka through his notable contribution.Recently Shri Noor Samad Abbalagere, Agricultural officer famous throgh his scientific literature and famous kannada poet. Shri Noor Samad participated in many state level and national level events and brought good name to Shivamogga district kannada literary. Noor Samad is authored many varieties of kannada poetery books on views related to nature, poors, agriculture, rural culture,kannada literal drama works and patriot songs.

Politics

Abbalagere is under the Shimoga Rural Assembly and Shimoga Lok Sabha constituency. Nearly 1500-1800 voters registered in 2015. Abbalagere has its own village(Gram) Panchayath.

Transport

A city bus began operation in 1994. A single city bus runs the Gopala-Bus Stand-Jayanagar-Navile-Abbalagere- Hounsou route 7 times per day. All private buses from Shimoga private bus stand towards; Savalanga, Nyamathi, Shika Ripura, Soraba, Honnali and Holalur routes stop at Abbalagere.Now recently in 2017, Shimoga mahanagara palika started KSRTC city bus services from Abbalagere to Sakrebailu and other routes. Abbalagere at SH -57 Shimoga -Hanagal state highway.
