The town of Sandnessjøen is located just southwest of the bridge on the island.[1] The Helgeland Bridge was designed by Holger S. Svensson. Construction began in 1989 and it was finished in 1991. The bridge officially opened in July 1991. The construction cost was {{NOK|200 million|link=yes}}.[2] The bridge was a toll bridge until 23 June 2005.[3] The {{convert|1065|m|ft|adj=mid|-long}} bridge is made up of 12 spans, the longest of which is {{convert|425|m}} long. The maximum clearance to the sea below the bridge is {{convert|45|m}}.
