He served as the head football coach at Northern Illinois University from 1976 to 1979, compiling a record of 14–29–1. A native of Johnson County, Texas, Culpepper was a linebacker for the Texas Longhorns 1960–1962. He helped his teams to Southwest Conference championships in 1961 and 1962. Culpepper was an All-SWC selection in 1961 and a team co-captain as a senior. He is best remembered for his hit (along with Johnny Treadwell) on Arkansas' Danny Brabham in 1962 that forced a fumble at the goal line and spurred the Longhorns to a 7–3 victory and a SWC title.[1] Head coaching record{{CFB Yearly Record Start | type = coach | team = | conf = | bowl = | poll = no }}{{CFB Yearly Record Subhead| name = Northern Illinois Huskies | conf = Mid-American Conference | startyear = 1976 | endyear = 1979 }}{{CFB Yearly Record Entry | championship = | year = 1976 | name = Northern Illinois | overall = 1–10 | conference = 0–6 | confstanding = 10th | bowlname = | bowloutcome = | bcsbowl = | ranking = no | ranking2 = no }}{{CFB Yearly Record Entry | championship = | year = 1977 | name = Northern Illinois | overall = 3–8 | conference = 2–5 | confstanding = 8th | bowlname = | bowloutcome = | bcsbowl = | ranking = no | ranking2 = no }}{{CFB Yearly Record Entry | championship = | year = 1978 | name = Northern Illinois | overall = 5–6 | conference = 2–4 | confstanding = 7th | bowlname = | bowloutcome = | bcsbowl = | ranking = no | ranking2 = no }}{{CFB Yearly Record Entry | championship = | year = 1979 | name = Northern Illinois | overall = 5–5–1 | conference = 3–3–1 | confstanding = T–4th | bowlname = | bowloutcome = | bcsbowl = | ranking = no | ranking2 = no }}{{CFB Yearly Record Subtotal | name = Northern Illinois | overall = 14–29–1 | confrecord = 7–18–1 }}{{CFB Yearly Record End | overall = 14–29–1 | bowls = no | poll = no | polltype = | legend = no }} References1. ^{{cite web|url=http://www.texassports.com/sports/m-footbl/spec-rel/052611aaa.html|title=Catching up with: Pat Culpepper|publisher=TexasSports.com}} Further reading
