HistoryThe town is named for the creek that forms part of the headwaters of the Thomson River.[4] In 1942 a large World War II ammunition dump exploded when a fire lit by American and Australian soldiers to create a firebreak got out of control. A series of 12 explosions resulted leaving craters {{convert|20|ft|m}} deep, nearly destroying the town.[4] Torrens Creek State School, now closed, opened in 1891. AmentitiesThe town has a hotel (pub) and a garage.[5] Transport{{s-start|noclear=yes}}{{s-text|style=background:#ccf; font-size:110%; font-weight:bold; |text=Long distance rail services}}{{s-rail|title=QR}}{{s-line|system=QR|line=The Inlander|previous=Pentland|next=Hughenden}}{{s-end}}References1. ^{{Cite QPN|35030|Torrens Creek|town|accessdate=12 June 2017}} 2. ^{{Cite QPN|42490|Torrens Creek|locality|accessdate=12 June 2017}} 3. ^1 {{Census 2006 AUS|id=SSC37737|name=Torrens Creek (Flinders Shire) (State Suburb)|accessdate=22 April 2012|quick=on}} 4. ^1 {{cite web|url=http://www.queenslandholidays.com.au/destinations/outback/places-to-visit/torrens-creek/index.cfm|title=Torrens Creek|last=|first=|date=|work=Outback Queensland|publisher=Tourism Queensland|archive-url=https://web.archive.org/web/20140403063942/http://www.queenslandholidays.com.au/destinations/outback/places-to-visit/torrens-creek/index.cfm|archive-date=3 April 2014|dead-url=yes|accessdate=22 April 2012}} 5. ^{{cite web|url=http://queenslandplaces.com.au/flinders-shire|title=Flinders Shire|publisher=Centre for the Government of Queensland|work=Queensland Places|accessdate=22 April 2012}} External links{{commons category-inline}}{{Shire of Flinders (Queensland)}} 3 : Towns in Queensland|North West Queensland|Queensland in World War II |
