ProductionWarner Bros. acquired the rights to the manga from its publisher Kodansha in 2008. At the time Ruairí Robinson was set to direct, from a screenplay by Gary Whitta that would see the story split into two films.[1] In February 2010, Albert Hughes was hired as director, replacing Robinson. Mark Fergus and Hawk Ostby and Albert Torres were brought in to help with the script. Hughes in an interview stated the film was aiming to be rated PG-13.[2][3] However in February 2011 Hughes exited the project.[4] In July 2011, Jaume Collet-Serra was hired to direct, with Steve Kloves providing revision work on Torre’s script.[5] The film received a green-light in October 2011, with filming eyed to begin by February or March 2012.[6]In January 2012, as film was gearing up to begin in Vancouver, Warner Bros. halted production, citing issues with casting, the script and the budget.[7] Collet-Serra would depart the film during this time, but returned in August 2013 when production began again.[8] He detailed his vision for the film in February 2014, stating that while it would be respectful of the source material, it would still have differences.[9] However by March 2015, he stated no further development on the film had been made.[10] In July that year, Marco Ramirez was hired to rewrite the script.[11] Collet-Serra was once again off the project, with directors like George Miller and Jordan Peele offered the film, but declined.[12][13] In September 2017, Taika Waititi entered negotiations to direct.[14] In an interview he asserted that his version would cast Asian actors to play the leads, as concerns over whitewashing in film became more widespread. He stated that he would also look more towards the manga as opposed to make a direct remake of the anime.[15] CastingAndrew Garfield, Robert Pattinson and Michael Fassbender were met with for the role of Tetsuo while Garrett Hedlund, Michael Fassbender, Chris Pine, Justin Timberlake and Joaquin Phoenix were reported to have been in the mix to star as Kaneda by May 2011, in addition to Keanu Reeves being courted to star.[16] Gary Oldman and Helena Bonham Carter were offered roles in the film, with Oldman as The Colonel, and Bonham Carter as Lady Miyako.[17] By November, Hedlund entered negotiations to star as Kaneda, with Kristen Stewart offered the role of Ky Reed. Oldman declined his offer, with Ken Watanabe approached to replace him.
