释义 |
The Paper Girl is a children's picture book written and illustrated by Angelos Vasilopoulos. The story was originally written in English, but later translated to Greek. It was first published in 2018 and distributed in the United States and Greece. The book stirred controversy in the months following its publication, with some critics suggesting that the book downplayed the sincerity of altruism in the presence of reward and others claiming that the book's seemingly existentialist themes were inappropriate for the age group that the book targeted. SynopsisAs the library of an unnamed city burns, a piece of paper flies out of one of the library's books and sails through the air during the night. Eventually, the piece of paper lands on the doorstep of the artist Mr. Peterson, who discovers that the piece of paper has been folded into a little paper girl by the wind. He adopts the paper girl and names her Kindness. Time passes and Kindness grows up like a regular child, but she can not go near water or fire because these will damage her paper skin. One New Year's Eve, she ventures secretly to the city near Mr. Peterson's house to see a fireworks show. In the city she meets a boy and promptly falls in love with him. Later that night it rains and Kindness's paper face becomes disfigured from the water. The boy loses his interest in her then and abandons Kindness. When she returns to Mr. Peterson he is not angry with her. He repairs her face, but the author remarks that Kindness's heart is still damaged and she seems to have lost hope for herself. Mr. Peterson tells Kindness that he has run out of the paper that he needs to fix her and that they must travel to the paper store of a neighboring city to get more. On the way to the paper store, Kindness encounters less-than-fortunate individuals and gives away parts of her paper body to help them. At the end of the story, Mr. Peterson and Kindness get caught in a snowstorm and stop to rest at the edge of a forest. Mr. Peterson lights a fire to stay warm, but he appears to be unhealthy. When he falls asleep, Kindness, having realized that the key to her happiness is selflessness, fuels the fire with the paper that he bought for her from the paper store. When the paper runs out, she burns her paper heart so that Mr. Peterson will not be cold in the night. |
