释义
      Structure    Classification

The Triforillonia fossil is from the Fermeuse Assemblage and obtains a three-lobed body with threefold symmetry (which is quite rare in the animal kingdom) extending from a central point.[1] Triforillonia appears to be a polyp-like organism and was the first new genus to be named from the Newfoundland Ediacaran fauna since Aspidella in 1872.[1] Two other distinctive body fossil taxa occur with Aspidella. One of the two specimens of the tentaculate disc Hiemalora Fedonkin, 1981, is the Triforillonia. Triforillonia is a trilobed fossil that shows typical Ediacaran-style preservations, occurring in the same places as Aspidella in a coastal section at Ferryland.[2]

Structure

The more specific structure of the Triforillonia is a three lobed body with rounded spatulate lobes, radiating at equal angles from a central rosette, with the surface of the lobes being slightly raised. The body outline is made up of three semicircles, joint at right angels.[2]

Classification

The derivation of the Genus name Triforillonia is a compound of the French prefix 'tri' and 'Forillon' which is the French cartographer's name for the rocky point that is now the settlement of Ferryland which is the locality.[3]

Fedonkin had a specific classification scheme for Ediacaran fossils based on their symmetry. He divided the Ediacaran fossils into two major groups, Radiata and Bilateria. The major group of Radiata is further divided into Cyclozoa (i.e. Aspidella), Inordozoa, and Trilobozoa, which is the three-rayed symmetry that categorizes Triforillonia.[1]

Triforillonia shares its three-fold symmetry with four other Ediacaran taxa: Tribrachidium heraldicum Glaessner, 1959, Skinnera brooksi Wade, 1969, Anfesta stankovskii Fedonkin, 1984, and Albumares brunsae Fedonkin, 1976.[3]{{Taxobox
