one {{convert|2.5|mi|km|adj=on}} bypassed section of the original route, about {{convert|37|mi|km}} southeast of Delta Junction, is listed on the National Register of Historic Places as "one of the few sections of the road in Alaska virtually unchanged." The unpaved road is used by local residents to access Craig Lake,[24][25] and is signed as Craig Lake Trail.

Other former segments have deteriorated and are no longer usable. More recent construction projects have deliberately plowed up roadway to close it.

1. ^ tag specifies a name parameter. All ref definitions are placed in the References section and referred to from the body text using the appropriate name parameter. LDR greatly reduces clutter in the body text, while ensuring only one version of each ref definition. For consistency, please use this method for any new refs. If you see a ref definition in the body text, please move it to the References section, adding a name parameter if necessary, and put a in its place in the body text. For more information about LDR, see the Help page WP:LDRHOW. -->{{Infobox road|country=CAN|type=Hwy|marker_image={{infobox road/shieldmain/CAN|province=BC|type=BC|route=97}}{{infobox road/shieldmain/CAN|province=YT|type=YT|route=1}}{{infobox road/shieldmain/US|state=AK|type=AK|route=2}}|name=Alaska Highway|allocation={{plainlist|1=*{{jct|province=BC|BC|97}}*{{jct|province=YT|YT|1|nolink1=yes}}*{{jct|state=AK|AK|2}} }}|map=Alaska Highway1.png|length_km=2232|length_round=0|length_ref=|length_notes=(as of 2012)|established=1942|direction_a=South|terminus_a={{jct|province=BC|BC|2|BC|97|name2=John Hart Highway}} in Dawson Creek, BC|junction={{plainlist|1=*{{jct|province=BC|BC|29}} in Charlie Lake, BC*{{jct|province=BC|BC|77}} near Fort Nelson, BC*{{jct|province=YT|YT|4}} in Watson Lake, YT*{{jct|province=YT|YT|37}} near Upper Liard, YT*{{jct|province=YT|YT|6}} at Johnsons Crossing, YT*{{jct|province=YT|YT|8}} at Jakes Corner, YT*{{jct|province=YT|YT|2}} in Carcross Cutoff, YT and Whitehorse, YT*{{jct|province=YT|YT|3}} at Haines Junction, YT*{{jct|state=AK|AK|5}} at Tetlin Junction, AK*{{jct|state=AK|AK|1}} in Tok, AK }}|direction_b=North|terminus_b={{jct|state=AK|AK|2|AK|4|name2=Richardson Highway}} at Delta Junction, AK|cities=Fort St. John, BC; Fort Nelson, BC; Watson Lake, YT; Whitehorse, YT; Tok, AK; Delta Junction, AK|system=|browse={{infobox road/browselinks/CAN|province=BC}}

It begins at the junction with several Canadian highways in Dawson Creek, British Columbia, and runs to Delta Junction, Alaska, via Whitehorse, Yukon. Completed in 1942 at a length of approximately {{convert|2700|km|mi|order=flip}}, {{As of|2012|lc=y}} it is {{convert|2232|km|mi|abbr=on|order=flip}} long. The difference in distance is due to constant reconstruction of the highway, which has rerouted and straightened out numerous sections. The highway was opened to the public in 1948. Legendary over many decades for being a rough, challenging drive, the highway is now paved over its entire length. Its component highways are British Columbia Highway 97, Yukon Highway 1 and Alaska Route 2.An informal system of historic mileposts developed over the years to denote major stopping points; Delta Junction, at the end of the highway, makes reference to its location at "Historic Milepost 1422." It is at this point that the Alaska Highway meets the Richardson Highway, which continues {{convert|155|km|mi|abbr=on|order=flip}} to the city of Fairbanks. This is often regarded, though unofficially, as the northern portion of the Alaska Highway, with Fairbanks at Historic Milepost 1520. Mileposts on this stretch of highway are measured from Valdez, rather than the Alaska Highway. The Alaska Highway is popularly (but unofficially) considered part of the Pan-American Highway, which extends south (despite its discontinuity in Panama) to Argentina.==History=====Proposal===[[File:Proposed Alaska Hwy routes 1938.png|Overview map for routes A and B, 1938{{cite news |title=How Road Will Benefit Prince George |url=http://pgnewspapers.pgpl.ca/fedora/repository/pgc:1938-02-24/-/Prince%20George%20Citizen%20-%20February%2024,%201938 |accessdate=September 17, 2018 |work=Prince George Citizen |date=February 24, 1938 |page=5 |language=en}}
