| name = Brinda Somaya | image = | image_size = | alt = | caption = | birth_name = | birth_date = {{Birth date and age|1949|6|28|df=yes}} | birth_place = | death_date = }}Brinda Somaya (born 28 June 1949) is an Indian architect and urban conservationist.[1] Early life and educationBrinda Somaya was born on 28 June 1949.[2] Somaya completed her Bachelor of Architecture degree from Mumbai University and her Master of Arts from Smith College in Northampton, United States.[3] CareerSomaya began her architectural practice in 1978 in Mumbai, India.[4] From 1978 to 1981 she was joined by her sister Ranjini Kalappa, who is also an architect.[5] Her work includes corporate, industrial and institutional campuses and extends to public spaces, which she has rebuilt and sometimes reinvented as pavements, parks and plazas.[6] Some of these campuses include Tata Consultancy Services, Banyan Park, Mumbai; [https://www.nalandaschool.org/ Nalanda International School, Vadodara;] and Zensar Technologies, Pune.[7] Her firm won the competition for the `Restoration and Upgradation of the historic Louis Kahn Buildings of the Indian Institute of Management, Ahmedabad (IIM-A)[8][9] as well as the new Academic Buildings of the Indian Institute of Technology – Bombay (IIT-B).[10] She is currently the Chairperson of Board of Governors for School of Planning and Architecture, Vijayawada.[11] AwardsIn 2004 Somaya she won the UNESCO Asia-Pacific Heritage award for the restoration of the St.Thomas' Cathedral in Mumbai.[12] She is also a Leading European Architects Forum award winner for the new Nalanda Schools Campus in Baroda in 2006.[13][14] Somaya was the first woman to have won the Wienerberger Golden Architect Award for lifetime achievement – a peer award, in 2007.[14] In 2008 a mention was awarded to Brinda Somaya by the UIA (International Union of Architects) Sgoutas Prize for alleviation of poverty for her Bhuj Village Project.[1][15] She received the AYA JK Cement Award for Indian State Architecture for the Jubilee Church at Navi, Mumbai,[16] and the Indian Institute of Architects' Kitply Award for Conservation for the Cathedral and John Connon Middle School.[17] Two of her projects were also nominated for the Aga Khan award. In 2013 she was chosen as one of the 100 GLOBAL PUBLIC INTEREST DESIGN persons working at the intersection of design and service globally.[14] In May 2012 she was the recipient of an honorary doctorate from her alma mater, Smith College.[18] In 2014 she was awarded the Indian Institute of Architects – Baburao Mhatre Gold Medal for Lifetime Achievement.[19] She was appointed an Andrew Dickson White Professor-at-Large at Cornell University from 2017 to 2023.[20] Notable works
