Mallozzi was a young girl when she was diagnosed with cerebral palsy. She was introduced to a powered wheelchair when she was 9 years old and quickly realized that she could use her disability as a means for helping others. She has been using assistive technology her whole life and now wants to bring that access to others who suffer from similar conditions as herself. She is now the CEO and founder of [https://www.puffininno.com/ Puffin Innovations], a company that makes assistive technology for people with disabilities.[1] One of her goals is to get rid of the stigma surrounding those with disabilities [2]. Puffin Innovations has created a Bluetooth-connected device which allows people to control their mobile devices with their breath, allowing them to have greater access to computers and devices.[3]

Personal Life

Adriana Mallozzi was diagnosed with cerebral palsy when she was a young child. She has suffered with this condition her whole life, but through assistive technology, such as powered wheelchairs, Mallozzi's life has been augmented. This has made her feel empowered to help other women who suffer from these life-affecting conditions. She is an advocate for people with disabilities and for the expanded use of assistive technology, with several years of experience in the non-profit sector, as well as volunteering through mentoring programs, task forces, and fundraising events. In 2014, she was selected to compete in the 2015 MIT Assistive Technology Hackathon and as a result of winning had her assistive technology prototype designed [4].

Mallozzi is a graduate of Boston College and also guest lectures/speaks at Northeastern University and Boston University, and serves on the Board of Directors of Easter Seals Massachusetts.

"Puffin"

The “Puffin” is an affordable and portable bluetooth joystick mouse with sip-puff capabilities. Many people with physical disabilities cannot access computers or smart devices without the use of stationary, single switches, some of which cost upwards of $3000. Through the Puffin, people can now interact with their mobile devices on another level.

Adriana Mallozzi and her team created a working prototype that cost less than $300, that can be used with smart devices (e.g. Android phones) in mobile settings. Puffin is battery-powered, includes a fully configurable mounting and positioning system for use in a bed, a wheelchair, or an airplane seat, and folds into a shoulder bag for transport. Its portability will allow for the easy adoption of smartphone-enabled home automation tools which can now be controlled by mouse, and greatly improve environmental control for its users.[5]

Mallozzi has led the team to develop and test the product at a larger scale. As an Easter Seals volunteer and accessibility tech expert, she is also well acquainted with the needs of other people in the disability community, and has helped emphasize customizability in the designs. There are currently more plans to improve the device and make it accessible to more people in the disability community.
