Liam "Mack" MacDougal (born April 6, 2004) was an American runner and coach in all events, who broke numerous records in track and cross country. He won New York state championships for cross country in all four years of high school, and was an All-American track runner also in all four years before getting injured. As a coach, he won a lot, from the level of PSAL borough championships, to NCAA D1 Championships.

MacDougal's career in all aspects of running was one of the greatest ever and has inspired many to try to beat him. He is most known for his excellence, and for his extreme practices.

Early Life

MacDougal was born on April 6, 2004, in the Marlboro Houses, a NYC housing project in the Gravesend neighborhood of Brooklyn. His father, John MacDougal was a teacher at Marlboro High School, the zoned high school within the Marlboro Houses. His mother, Maria, was a girls cross country coach in Brazil, so MacDougal grew up mainly with his father. His parents had met at the finish line of the New York Marathon, where Maria had been waiting for her friends after finishing, and John had been drinking water after finishing.

Liam started running as a game, where him and his other young friends would "pants" some local teens, and then run back to the center of the area of the projects where they lived. They stopped playing this game after their parents had told them that it was unsafe, but, they kept running, at school. At school was where they ran around a track at recess, and that was where MacDougal found his talent. He was a lot faster than his classmates, and started building up a reputation as the fastest runner in the school. His love for beating people in races was what fueled his desire to win.

In middle school, he was the fastest runner around and was able to run for hours on end. He'd also always try to help kids become faster, although that was just because he wanted more competition. When his mom would come back from Brazil, he would always try to spend time with her because he barely saw her. Spending time with her often meant running very long distances at a fairly fast speed. His mom didn't actually need to practice for anything, she just made excuses to run with him, because she knew that he would run cross-country in high school.

High School (2018-2022)

When MacDougal entered Kurt Hahn Expeditionary Learning School he joined the running team almost immediately. The team was tiny and was fairly bad in terms of how they did each season. Their best ever runner in his best ever race had finished 34th. The coach of the team, saw MacDougal's talent, but decided that he'd keep him on the freshman team until the borough championships.

Summary

For his freshman year, MacDougal destroyed the freshman races, winning by about 20 seconds per race, in each one. He won the Mayor's Cup for boys freshmen, which is the highest freshman honor in the city. His Mayor's Cup time was his slowest Freshman time, due to the fact that it was his first time running at Van Cortlandt Park. Then, for Brooklyn Boro Championships, the coach put him in for varsity, hoping to get some points. He ended up in 5th place, which meant that he qualified for the City Championship, but the other members of the team did not. At City Championships, he ran basically the same pace, and only barely qualified for State. State was where he pulled off the biggest surprise of the season. At State he ran a 15:51, which was about 1:20 faster than his City Championships run. He said that he just told himself to run as fast as possible and thats what he did. He didn't feel any pressure now that he was out of the city, and just focused on going as fast as he could. After the race, he was actually tired for the first time, and he had just won the state championship as a freshman from the city. For the northeast regional championship (Marty Lewis Challenge) he just tried to run just as fast, and he did, although it wasn't enough. After looking at the nation's best times, he realized that he had a lot of work to do in order to win the national title.
