The Bridgewater Monument is a Grade II* listed monumental column in Hertfordshire.[1] Built on the Ashridge estate in 1832 in memory of Francis Egerton, 3rd Duke of Bridgewater (1736–1803),[2] it is {{convert|108|ft|m}} tall, with 172 steps inside. The Duke is described on the monument as "the father of inland navigation".[3] It was designed by Sir Jeffry Wyattville in a Doric style: the architect also worked on the Gothic Revival house on the estate.[1] Although the waterway most closely associated with the deceased was the Bridgewater Canal, the monument overlooks the Grand Union Canal and the village of Aldbury.
