Jas Hennessy & Co. sells about 50 million bottles a year worldwide, or more than 40 percent of the world's cognac, making it the largest cognac producer. It is owned by Moët Hennessy, which is in turn owned by LVMH (66%) and Diageo (34%). HistoryThe Hennessy cognac distillery was founded by Irish Jacobite military officer Richard Hennessy in 1765.[1] During the 1970s, Kilian Hennessy, a fifth-generation direct descendant of Hennessy, became the CEO of Hennessy, succeeding his first cousin Maurice-Richard. Kilian Hennessy spearheaded the company's 1971 merger with Moët et Chandon, which created Moët Hennessy.[2] Moët Hennessy merged with Louis Vuitton in 1987, creating one of the world's largest luxury brand conglomerates, Louis Vuitton • Moët-Hennessy or LVMH. In 1988, a management crisis led to the group's takeover by Bernard Arnault, owner of the haute couture house Christian Dior, with the support of Guinness.{{Citation needed|reason=The previous citation here also used the 'afp' citation. Hennessy was the favorite drink of Kim Jong-il, leader of the Democratic People's Republic of Korea. Hennessy once reported that Kim spent over $700,000 a year on Paradis cognac.[15] Notes1. ^{{cite book|author=Time Inc|title=LIFE|url=https://books.google.com/books?id=1kQEAAAAMBAJ&pg=PA64|date=24 May 1937|publisher=Time Inc|page=64|issn=0024-3019}} 2. ^1 {{cite news|title=Cognac magnate Kilian Hennessy dies at 103|url=http://www.expatica.com/fr/news/french-news/cognac-magnate-kilian-hennessy-dies-at-103-official_100604.html|work=Agence France Presse|date=3 October 2010|accessdate=10 October 2010}} 3. ^"Introducing Hennessy Black", cocktailenthusiast.com, 2 June 2010; retrieved 16 March 2011. 4. ^Hein, Kenneth.
