As of the 2000 census, the township population was 1,584. CommunitiesThe village of Ahmeek is the only incorporated municipality in the township. There are a few unincorporated communities:
GeographyAccording to the United States Census Bureau, the township has a total area of {{convert|54.7|sqmi|km2}}, of which {{convert|54.7|sqmi|km2}} is land and {{convert|0.04|sqmi|km2}} (0.07%) is water. DemographicsAs of the census[1] of 2000, there were 1,584 people, 710 households, and 430 families residing in the township. The population density was 29.0 per square mile (11.2/km²). There were 973 housing units at an average density of 17.8 per square mile (6.9/km²). The racial makeup of the township was 98.93% White, 0.06% Native American, 0.13% Asian, 0.06% from other races, and 0.82% from two or more races. Hispanic or Latino of any race were 0.19% of the population. 44.6% were of Finnish, 8.7% German, 7.4% Italian, 6.9% English and 5.7% French ancestry. There were 710 households out of which 25.8% had children under the age of 18 living with them, 50.6% were married couples living together, 6.3% had a female householder with no husband present, and 39.3% were non-families. 35.5% of all households were made up of individuals and 17.9% had someone living alone who was 65 years of age or older. The average household size was 2.23 and the average family size was 2.92. In the township the population was spread out with 22.9% under the age of 18, 6.3% from 18 to 24, 24.2% from 25 to 44, 26.8% from 45 to 64, and 19.8% who were 65 years of age or older. The median age was 43 years. For every 100 females, there were 103.6 males. For every 100 females age 18 and over, there were 97.9 males. The median income for a household in the township was $26,500, and the median income for a family was $34,904. Males had a median income of $26,034 versus $21,250 for females. The per capita income for the township was $14,974. About 9.4% of families and 14.7% of the population were below the poverty line, including 15.6% of those under age 18 and 16.4% of those age 65 or over.
