At the time of the 2000 Census, its population was 143, with an estimated 122 people as of 2009.[3] HistoryAdvance Township was organized in 1888 from the northern part of Akra Township. Akra Township was a "double township" at the time, covering two full survey townships. It was originally named Avon Township, but renamed Advance in 1905.[4] Some early settlers in the township migrated here from the nearby Icelandic communities.[6] The township population of 482 in 1900 was likely near the peak population.[7] Backoo, a town of approximately 50 people northwest of Cavalier, was the most prominent population center in the township.[6] It was established in 1887 as a townsite on the Great Northern Railroad.[9] The post office here was in continuous operation from 1887 to 1988.[10][11]References1. ^{{cite web|url=http://factfinder2.census.gov |publisher=United States Census Bureau |accessdate=2008-01-31 |title=American FactFinder |deadurl=yes |archiveurl=https://web.archive.org/web/20130911234518/http://factfinder2.census.gov/ |archivedate=2013-09-11 |df= }} [3][4][5][6][7][8][9]2. ^{{cite web|url=http://geonames.usgs.gov|accessdate=2008-01-31|title=US Board on Geographic Names|publisher=United States Geological Survey|date=2007-10-25}} 3. ^1 {{cite web |author=U.S. Census Bureau |authorlink=United States Census Bureau | url=http://www2.census.gov/prod2/decennial/documents/03322287no1-60ch6.pdf |title= Population of North Dakota |format=PDF |work=Twelfth Census of the United States: 1900 |publisher=Government Printing Office |year=1901|accessdate=2008-07-20}} 4. ^1 {{cite book|last=Johnson|first=Sveinbjorn|editor=Libby, Orin Grant| title=The Icelandic Settlement of Pembina County|series= Collections of the State Historical Society of North Dakota| publisher = Tribune, State Printers and Binders| year = 1906| location = Bismarck, ND| volume=1|pages = 109| oclc=01773487 }} 5. ^1 2 {{cite web|author=Steinolfson, Arlan: The Dakota Icelanders Project |url=http://www.rootsweb.ancestry.com/~nddip/advance.html |title=Icelandic Settlers of Advance (Avon) Township|year=2009|accessdate=2010-07-02}} 6. ^1 {{cite web|url=https://www.census.gov/popest/cities/tables/SUB-EST2009-05-38.csv |archive-url=https://web.archive.org/web/20100627043817/http://www.census.gov/popest/cities/tables/SUB-EST2009-05-38.csv |dead-url=yes |archive-date=2010-06-27 |title=Incorporated Places and Minor Civil Divisions: North Dakota |format=CSV |year=2010 |work=2009 Population Estimates |author=U.S. Census Bureau |authorlink=United States Census Bureau |accessdate=2010-06-22 }} 7. ^1 {{cite web|url=http://www.usps.com/postmasterfinder/ |title=Postmaster Finder |publisher=U.S. Postal Service |accessdate=2010-07-02 |archiveurl=https://web.archive.org/web/20100723003437/http://www.usps.com/postmasterfinder/ |archivedate=23 July 2010 |deadurl=yes |df= }} 8. ^1 {{cite book | author=Patera, Alan H. | authorlink= |author2= John S.
