A former pupil of Stonelaw High School in Rutherglen,[2] Deans started his career as an apprentice with Chelsea before moving back to Scotland in 1983. He made his Clyde debut aged 17 under manager Craig Brown,[3] and went on to score 14 league goals for the club in two years, before transferring to Doncaster Rovers for a fee of £40,000. He only spent a season there, as injury forced him to retire in 1986, aged only 20.[4] References1. ^{{Hugman|4951|accessdate=14 March 2017}} 2. ^{{cite news|url=https://www.dailyrecord.co.uk/news/local-news/stonelaw-high-waves-farewell-favourite-2562024|title=Stonelaw High waves farewell to favourite teacher|work=Daily Record / Rutherglen Reformer|date=5 October 2011|accessdate=13 March 2018}} 3. ^{{cite web|url=https://www.clydefc.co.uk/club/history/hall-of-fame/craig-brown/|title=Hall of Fame - Craig Brown|publisher=Clyde F.C.|accessdate=18 March 2018}} 4. ^{{cite web|url=http://www.doncasterrovers.co.uk/players/DtoF/Deans,Ray.htm|title=Ray Deans|publisher=Doncaster Rovers (unofficial archive site)|accessdate=18 March 2018}} External links
