Early life and educationRuth was born in Windsor, Ontario, was raised by a single mother, and lived in the United States, Canada, and Colombia while growing up.[1] Ruth earned an Honours BA and an MA from the University of Toronto. CareerBefore becoming a published writer, she worked in social services in Ontario and British Columbia. Her debut novel, Ten Good Seconds of Silence, was nominated for the Rogers Writers' Trust Fiction Prize, the Books in Canada First Novel Award and the City of Toronto Book Award in 2001. Her second novel, Smoke, was published in 2005. Openly lesbian, Ruth also organized a monthly reading series, "Clit Lit", for lesbian writers in Toronto.[2]WorksFiction
