Taishan has an area of {{convert|1910|km2|abbr=on}} and around one million inhabitants (2003). In January 2019, the Shandong provincial government announced in a decision that Laiwu Prefecture was absorbed by Jinan. Laicheng District was renamed to Laiwu District under Jinan's administration.
